How to dress to impress for a virtual job interview
With more organisations conducting job interviews over video platforms, choosing what to wear has brought new challenges. What looks good in person may not on video.
Dressing specifically for a job interview is essential to make a good first impression.
On video the interviewer won’t see the whole outfit or the candidate in full, so it’s essential to make sure that nothing about the outfit or the background distracts the interviewer.
Here are some guidelines to take note of when planning a virtual interview.
Tips to Dressing Right for a Virtual Interview
Take it Seriously
What you wear for a virtual interview should be the same as you would wear for an in-person interview. Depending on the industry and position, you should opt for business attire.
The interview outfit should let the candidate shine in an interview environment and not be a distraction.
Personal Grooming
Personal grooming is a major part of personal style and a way to display professionalism. Make a good impression and demonstrate that you are taking the interview seriously.
Consider the Lighting
There’s little point in dressing appropriately if there is inappropriate lighting.
Set up the lighting for the interview. It’s important to make sure that there is sufficient light so that you can be clearly seen. However, make sure the light isn’t too bright and consider using lamps for warmer tones.
Consider the Setting
If you are in front of a light blank wall as background, choose bright solids colours. If you are in front of a deep colour wall or background choose pastels and neutral colours.
When framing the video, ensure your head and the top half of your body are totally inside the frame. Sit up straight, and centre yourself in the video.
Think Colour
There are some colours that should be avoided because laptop cameras are relatively low quality, and alter the way images register.
- Avoid Black
Laptop cameras have difficulty capturing texture on black fabrics and therefore it appears as a black mass.
- Avoid Bright Colours
It’s important to avoid bright colors, especially bright white, green red and orange. The laptop camera will have difficulty adjusting exposure on your face if you are wearing bright white. Red and orange can bleed on the screen, creating a haze.
- Choose Neutral Colours
Neutral tones like grey, ivory, light pastels or blue are good choices.
You Should Shine not Your Clothes
You should shine during an interview, without distractions from your attire. Wear a solid, muted color without a bright or complicated pattern or large lettering.
Clothes Should be a Culture Fit
Aim to look as if you fit into the organisation culture. Take cues from the company culture, so research the company style before the interview.
Choose an Outfit for Confidence
Choose an outfit that you feel comfortable in to feel and project confidence during the interview.
Test Before the Interview
Run a test before the actual job interview. Take a selfie or check how you look through the laptop webcam.
