University of Winnipeg is looking for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor, Department of History

Location: Winnipeg, Canada

Job Type: Full-time

Description:

The Department of History at the University of Winnipeg acknowledges that we live and work in the ancestral and traditional territories of the Anishinaabe, Anishininew, Assiniboine, Cree, Dakota, Dene, and the heartland of the Métis nation.

We invite applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2021, subject to budgetary approval. The successful candidate will have or be close to completing a PhD in Art History or a directly related field. This position is designated for Indigenous persons and members of Racialized Communities only, with experience in Canadian Art History, which would include areas such as Indigenous, African, Islamic, Pacific, South and East Asian Canadian Art History.

Candidates should have a research and teaching profile in art history and visual culture of Canada or northern North America (also identified as Turtle Island). Research interests can include past, present, and continuous art forms pertaining to Indigenous, African, Islamic, Pacific, South and East Asian cultures within the Canadian context. We welcome candidates whose research expertise encompasses histories of materially based practices, as well as genres such as performance, new-media and moving-image work. We also recognize scholars whose research portfolio includes a curatorial practice and/or curatorial studies, which is a strength of our department and our Curatorial Practices and Cultural Studies Masters programs.

The successful candidate will be expected to fully participate in academic life through contributions to research, teaching and service. The candidate is expected to have a scholarly record and a developed research agenda with strong commitment to our student body with respect to teaching and research. The candidate will perform administrative duties and engage in committee work.

The University of Winnipeg is striving to lead the way in Indigenization and is an inclusive and diverse campus. It is committed to the study of art history, broadly defined, as it reveals the past and informs the future. Our scholars specialize in European art history, Indigenous art history, material culture, curatorial practice, design, and digital media. We boast a 4000 square foot Indigenous research centre and digital media labs, an excellent M.A program in curatorial practices, global and national field study courses, strong connections to the local galleries and robust research profiles. The program is excited to build a stronger Canadian art history focus on our department which will allow for additional strength in our expertise and a rewarding relationship with the local arts community. With the addition of a Canadian specialist, we will continue to deliver strong, vibrant, and practical curriculum focused on excellence, decolonization, accessibility, and innovation.

Interested candidates please apply with resume, cover letter, a sample publication or writing sample (maximum 30 pages), and three references.
