Johns Hopkins University is looking for a Staff Psychologist – Coordinator of Services to Black Students

General Summary:

The Counselling Center (CC) is a member of the Johns Hopkins University Student Health & Well-Being (SHWB) practice group which supports wellness, primary care, and mental health services for JHU students and learners across all nine schools within the university. In addition to the SHWB wellness office, our integrated service delivery model provides in-person primary and mental health care options at our clinics as well as remote support though phone and online resources.

The Counseling Center (CC) provides services to students in full-time graduate and undergraduate academic programs in the Schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering, as well as the Peabody Institute of Music.

This Staff Counselor position will include a significant focus on coordinating services for African American/Black students. This person is expected to work collaboratively within the CC, with other offices on campus and with the students themselves to develop programs and services designed to best meet the needs of the university’s African American and Black identified students. As with all Counseling Center staff, this person will also operate as a generalist who provides a full range of services to the JHU student body, including individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, outreach, consultation, supervision, and training. The person in this position may be asked to provide some services at other JHU locations in addition to the CC.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provides clinical services, including initial consultations, individual counseling, group counseling, couples counseling and crisis intervention to JHU students, with a special emphasis on services for Black students.
  • Provides outreach, and consultation services to the university community, particularly for Black students.
  • Works collaboratively with other offices on campus to develop and provide a network of supportive services for Black students.
  • Provides after-hours on-call coverage (as backup to ProtoCall) in rotation with the rest of the clinical staff.
  • Shares expertise and provides training regarding the needs of Black students to CC staff, including CC doctoral interns, on topics such as racism, anti-blackness, and racial trauma.
  • Participates in the CC’s APA-approved training program for doctoral psychology interns, including through the provision of supervision.

Education:

Doctorate in Counseling or Clinical Psychology required. Must be eligible to be licensed as a psychologist in Maryland and obtain licensure within 2 years of hire.

Experience:

  • Provision of individual and group counseling to a diverse population.
  • Development and implementation of psycho-educational programming
  • Provision of individual and group counselling to a college student population.
  • Supervision of graduate student trainees

Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of college student presenting concerns in individual and group counselling, with special expertise and experience working with Black students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, campus departments, and student groups.
  • Ability to effectively engage audiences during presentations.
  • Commitment to actively engage in practice with diverse populations.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Commitment to one’s own ongoing development of multicultural competence as a psychologist.
