The position is grant-funded for a period of three years with plans for institutionalization by the College at the end of the grant. Job Description:

Nevada State College invites applications for the position of Academic Success Coach housed within the School of Education (SOE). The Academic Success Coach will support efforts related to teacher education pathways associated with the U.S. Department of Education Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (DHSI) grant awarded on October 1, 2017 and running through September 30, 2021. NSC’s DHSI project titled, Cultivando Mentes (Culitivating Minds), will expand and enhance the existing teacher education program with the goal of cultivating culturally inspired and community minded teachers who can meet the language and achievement needs of increasingly diverse classrooms.

The Academic Success Coach is primarily responsible for tracking Pre-Education students and providing success coaching related to degree planning, preparation and completion of the PRAXIS Core and PRAXIS II subject exams, and other skills needed for academic success and timely degree completion. This includes developing, managing, and supporting a peer-to-peer mentorship program for SOE students, coordinating academic success and test preparation workshops, and supporting other related events or activities in the School of Education.

The Student Success Coach will report to the Title V Project Director, who is primarily responsible for overseeing and facilitating implementation of all project components, including recruitment, budget management, evaluation, and reporting. The Student Success Coach will work alongside a dedicated and collegial team of faculty, staff, and administrators, and will help advance critical DHSI initiatives while serving as a liaison to NSC departments and offices. While this position will be fully grant-funded during Years 3-5 of the grant, this position will continue to serve an important need in the School of Education and will be institutionalized by the College at the conclusion of the grant.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Use a developmental, coaching approach to mentoring at walk-in and appointment-based coaching sessions
  • Monitor, review, and analyse data related to Pre-Education majors’ progress towards admission to School of Education, including completion of PRAXIS Core and GPA requirements, to coordinate targeted outreach, workshops, and coaching
  • Act as a liaison to campus departments and give students resources to complete procedures on campus such as (but not limited to): academic petitions, financial aid petitions, registration, withdrawal, major change, and student information updates
  • Collaborate with Writing Center and the Academic Success Center to recruit and incorporate PRAXIS tutors in PRAXIS support activities
  • Coordinate PRAXIS Core and PRAXIS content support programming, including, but limited to mock exam sessions, PRAXIS workshops, and dissemination of PRAXIS resources
  • Coordinate, create, and deliver student success workshops for Pre-Education and Education students
  • Participate in School of Education new/transfer student orientation sessions, other college access programs, and summer programming for incoming pre-education majors
  • Collect, prepare, and present detailed reports for various constituents regarding student academic success, progression, remediation, and retention outcomes/activities to make data-driven recommendations for process and quality improvements to the School of Education
  • Delegate tasks to student workers

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • At least one (1) year of experience working in higher education (e.g., advising, counseling/peer mentoring, student support services)
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience working with low-income, first-generation, and diverse students
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (NSC does not sponsor employment-related visas)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (or higher) from an accredited institution
  • Comprehensive knowledge of student development, theoretical approaches to academic advising, and the ability to utilize data and student success research
  • Demonstrated experience creating advising tools and methods; experience developing and conducting workshops
  • Familiarity or background working in test preparation or coaching
  • Personal experience in overcoming cultural, academic, and economic obstacles to success
