Position Summary:
The “Akoma” (Akan word for heart) Wraparound pilot project, is an initiative that seeks to reduce racial inequities and increase the well-being of African Caribbean Black (ACB) Canadian families who are involved with the child welfare system within Peel region. The pilot project will do so through the provision of high quality, comprehensive, culturally relevant, team-based wraparound services. The “Akoma” service model was developed in consultation with numerous community stakeholders.
The successful candidate will provide targeted child welfare services to Black children, youth and families by engaging the family in establishing a strengths-based relationship to identify, create, and build a supportive Family Team that works together with Peel CAS for the purpose of developing an outcome plan that is individualized, child focused, strength-based, family centred and community oriented.
Major Skills & Responsibilities:
Using anti-Black racism, anti-oppressive, and culturally centred wraparound principles, the duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
- Work across families, schools, and communities to develop and coordinate formal and informal support networks for Black families, help parents/families identify and access additional services
- Connect service users with resources and support systems
- Work collaboratively with youth, professionals and other service providers by developing individualized and effective service delivery plans using a strength based, youth and family perspective
- Motivate and support Black youth and families in assessing needs of youth and their families/caregivers
- Develop, implement and evaluate service plans according to individual client and family/caregiver needs
- Meet face-to-face with clients in their own home for the provision of all services when applicable
- Assist in supporting the Black community to navigate Peel Children’s Aid Society and other service systems through engagement, education, and relationship building with local stakeholders
- Coordinate ‘team meetings’ with the child and family to complete intake, assessments, develop strengths-based plan of care, and crisis-plan
- Skilled in working with local community, advocacy and system navigation, assisting Black parents/families that have child welfare involvement to navigate through the system navigation
- Engage in regularly scheduled clinical supervision and coaching
- Develop and deliver seminars/workshops and presentations
- Participate in quality improvement and program evaluation initiatives; ensuring the availability of required information for all clients by maintaining comprehensive case records and data in a timely manner; preparing surveys, monthly statistics and summary report of activities
- Report immediately any suspected incidents of child abuse or neglect to Peel CAS
- Participate in all training requirements
- Work collaboratively as a member of the Roots CS team with staff, volunteers and community partners to meet the objectives of this project
- Perform other related work as assigned by the Executive Director
Qualifications:
- BSW or related social sciences (preferred), or equivalent combination of education, experience and advocacy or working with marginalized groups
- Minimum 3 years of experience in child welfare or relevant social services
- Knowledge of the child welfare service delivery context and service provision to African Canadian children, youth, and families
- Demonstrated understanding of anti-Black racism, equity, and issues impacting the African Canadian community
- Knowledge in a variety of evidence-informed treatment modalities including anti-black racism, anti-oppression and other culturally sensitive approaches to intervention
- Knowledge of and adherence to agency policies and procedures as well as relevant legislation for children’s services
- Experienced in using high levels of oral and written communication skills, time management and critical thinking, either in front line practice and/or in a management/supervisory role
- Self-directed, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with youth/families while working as part of a team
- Ability to effectively assess, manage, design, and implement a crisis plan to ensure safety for the client
- Available to be on-call and immediate crisis response availability
- Ability to work a flexible work week (including evenings and weekends)
- Have a valid driver’s license and access to reliable vehicle
- A clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required
