The Opportunity:

As a member of the Nova Scotia Works Centre team in Elmsdale, NS, the School Liaison Career Development Practitioner will support students in Grades 7-12 attending Hants East Rural Highschool, Hants North Rural Highschool, and South Colchester Academy and their families in exploring career options and understanding Nova Scotia labour market information.

As the Province continues to work toward the provision of more diverse and inclusive services for all Nova Scotians, the School Liaison will serve all students and will also focus on underrepresented cohorts in their assigned schools. This position is designated for someone from our First Nations Communities.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and enhance relationships with assigned schools (public school and post-secondary), community organizations, service providers, employers/industry partners and other referral agencies.
  • Plan, promote and/or deliver career supports and stakeholder engagement in consultation with school administration and other-related school personnel.
  • Gather and disseminate current and relevant career and Labour Market Information to students
  • Deliver student workshops focused on essential and employability skills that align with LMI, workplace expectations and job opportunities.
  • Assist students in accessing resources and information required to achieve career goals.
  • Promote and deliver “Lets Talk Careers” (formerly Parents as Coaches)
  • Provide individualized and/or group career support to students and families.
  • Access and implement tool to measure success of Nova Scotia Works Liaison supports and outreach.

Required Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong working knowledge of career development theories, methods, practices, tools, and resources
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Solid understanding of Labour Market Information and its applications
  • Committed to inclusionary practice, ethical decision making, confidentiality and working with diverse client groups.
  • Good knowledge of community organizations, service providers, and public-school system
  • Ability to access and effectively use information and communication technology.
  • Proficient professional documentation and data collection skills
  • Ability to design, organize and implement group sessions with diverse client groups.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and career self-management.
  • Solid understanding of assessment processes, tools, and resources
  • Working knowledge of employment/career related services, programs, and interventions

Qualifications:

  • Strong working knowledge of Career Development Services-Designation as a Certified Career Development Practitioner (CCDP) an asset
  • Degree or post-secondary education in Human Services or related field of study or a combination of relevant education and work/volunteer related experience
  • Experience using Microsoft 365; software applications such as Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Experience working with youth, persons with disabilities, Indigenous Peoples, African Nova Scotians, other racially visible persons would be considered an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle is necessary for this position.
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a current and satisfactory criminal record check.
