Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of science or a combination of education and scientific experience totalling 4 years in combination
  • Post-baccalaureate training and education in science communications especially in disorders/diseases
  • Strong science and research background; especially at and within the University of Minnesota system
  • Knowledge of animal disease and diagnostics especially in poultry, dairy, and swine
  • Familiar with animal production especially poultry, dairy, and swine
  • Competent with data gathering and documentation
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management and Quality Assurance Systems
  • Previous experience directing the work of hourly employees and/or student workers

  • Able to work under tight timelines.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Secure Food System team and workgroups to develop African Swine Fever (ASF) and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) risk assessments (20% effort)
  • Conduct meta-analyses and literature reviews of infectious agents and animal agriculture commodities of interest (20% effort)
  • Research industry standards, government regulations and proposed mitigations as applicable to risk analysis (20% effort)
  • Develop technical content including disease spread information, infectious hazard identification, summary documents and recommendations for risk assessment chapters. (10% effort)
  • Participate in and organize industry –government workgroup calls (20% effort)
  • Support completion of the risk assessments by proof-reading documents, fact-checking, and reviewing references with reference management software (10% effort)
