Responsibilities:
Program Coordinators (PCs) work closely with the Deans and Directors in the Division of Student Affairs in several different capacities. PCs have programmatic, student support, and potential incident response responsibilities. This Program Coordinator position is a restricted position with a 2 – year term.
Programmatic responsibilities generally include program design, implementation, and/or support services related to the assigned program. Often UVA student affairs professionals are not managing programs themselves but are supporting students in designing and implementing the programs.
Student support responsibilities include mentoring, training, and/or supervising student leaders; helping students solve problems; and responding appropriately to challenges and/or crises. Through formal and informal interaction, student affairs professionals assist students in achieving their goals. These interactions include responding to questions from parents, faculty or staff and meeting with students who have interpersonal problems, policy violations, psychological issues, or other concerns to counsel, mediate resolutions, or set expectations for future behavior.
PCs may also have responsibilities relating to incident response and crisis management. These may include analysing, synthesizing, and reporting case data; assisting Deans or other senior leadership with administrative matters; or completing special projects and assignments as needed. PCs do not serve on the “Dean On-Call” rotation.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have the following required knowledge areas, skills and abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 1-2 years of relevant experience, or master’s degree or equivalent in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs Administration, or other discipline. Relevant student experience may be considered.
- Strong commitment to the division’s core values of academic rigor, diversity and inclusion, health and wellness, honour, public service and student self-governance
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and diversity; and
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
A competitive applicant for the Program Coordinator position will have many of the following Preferred knowledge areas, skills and abilities:
- Domain knowledge specific to the Student Affairs program in which the Program Coordinator will work
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Understanding of the University’s educational mission, strategic aims, and programs, including student culture and unique student self-governance model
- Understanding of student development, identity development, intersections and complexity of social identities; and/or
- Experience with assessment and data-driven decision-making.
