Summary:

The Leon County Democratic Black Caucus is looking to bring on-board several volunteer interns to help lobby, attend city and commission events, organize grassroots events, and monitor several of their social media accounts. The Leon County Democratic Black Caucus aims to increase the political power of Black Democrats within the Democratic Party of Florida. We, as, a caucus look forward to doing this by encouraging qualified citizens in becoming candidates for public office, supporting, and electing duly selected nominees of the Democratic Party in National, State, and local campaigns, and supporting and soliciting support for legislation and governmental action on a national, state, county, and local level which reflect the best interest of the people in their respective areas.

In exchange to anyone who volunteers as an intern for the Leon County Democratic Black Caucus, we look forward to helping the academic commitments of interns by signing off on volunteer hours, or filling out internship credit forms, and writing letter of recommendations who have performed exceptional work.

Responsibilities:

  • Actively work on developing lobbying initiatives in the capitol, track legislation pertaining to civil rights, meet legislators, and attend lobbying committee hearings
  • Attending the city council and commission meetings and providing updates to us during meetings Speak at hearings if desired
  • Collectively host at least 2 events every month that revolve around town halls, site visits, rallies, and urban/rural dialogue
  • Attend weekly virtual meetings with other volunteers and volunteer team leaders
  • Participate in virtual community events, advocacy work, and administrative projects as needed.
  • Must be available at least 2 hours per week and have access to reliable internet, phone and computer.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a registered democrat that currently lives in the city of Tallahassee.
  • Identify as African American millennial, or undergraduate student, or post-graduate student.
  • Interest in political advocacy work and community organizing work
  • Outstanding creative and interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a political environment
  • Adaptability to virtual learning and an enthusiasm to learn new skills
  • Flexibility for night and weekend hours, as well as a commitment to meeting the 8 hours a week maximum
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a genuine interest in working with people of all backgrounds
  • Experience in advocacy, political campaigns, or law is a plus.
  • Always has a positive and reliable attitude.
