Job Summary:
The Philosophy/Religious Studies Faculty will provide instruction in both Philosophy courses and Religious Studies courses in alignment with CGCC’s college goals and learner-centered instructional philosophy to a diverse student population. He or she will use multiple methods and modalities of instruction, assessment, and appropriate technologies to engage students and promote student success. He or she will demonstrate a commitment to rigorous curriculum, innovative strategies for teaching and learning, collaboration, service excellence, and professional development, as well as an understanding of the importance of and appreciation for diversity.
Essential Functions:
Supervises, instructs, evaluates, and monitors learning of a diverse population of students in classroom, online, or field settings using a variety of learning strategies such as cooperative learning, service learning, instructional technology, or other as appropriate. Reviews, revises, and develops curriculum. Is available on campus to support and mentor adjunct faculty.
Maintains office hours to assist and advise students; actively participates in service to the college that contributes to the support of student learning; service includes involvement in district-wide, campus and departmental committees, activities, and initiatives; develops and enhances knowledge of subject matter taught and individual skills required to stay current with new trends and developments in the field, including attendance at conferences, courses, seminars, and/or workshops.
Qualifications:
- A master’s degree in Philosophy
- Master’s degree in Religious Studies OR Master’s degree in any teaching field with eighteen (18) graduate semester hours in Religious Studies or courses that relate to the development of religion and religious history within such fields as Philosophy, Theology, Anthropology, History, or Sociology.
The candidate must have evidence of knowledge of diverse religious traditions. Knowledge of diverse religious traditions is defined as a working knowledge of at least five of the following: a) Hinduism, b) Buddhism, c) Taoism or Confucianism, d) Judaism, e) Christianity, f) Islam, g) African traditions, h) Asian/Pacific traditions, i) North American Indian traditions. Knowledge of at least five of these diverse religious traditions must be demonstrated in any one or more of the following ways:
- Graduate course work at a regionally accredited college or university to include 3 comparative courses (at least 9 semester credits) or 9 semester credits in Non-Western Religions and 9 semester credits in Western Religions and/or
- Previous teaching experience at a regionally accredited college or university which could be 4 courses of one religion or 4 courses of comparative religion* *(Mysticism, Comparative Religion, Women and Religion and Comparative Ritual) and/or
- Publishing at least one article or chapter in religion through academically peer reviewed journals or standard academic publishing companies (for example: McGraw-Hill, Prentice-Hall.
- EDU 250-Teaching and Learning in the Community College-or equivalent must be completed within two years of date of hire.
Desired Qualifications:
- PhD in Philosophy
- PhD in Theology/Religious studies
- Experience teaching Philosophy and/or Theology/Religious studies in the past five years in a higher education setting
- Experience using a diverse set of effective learning strategies and emerging technologies in instruction
- Experience with teaching in multiple modalities (face-to-face, online, hybrid, and/or learning communities)
- Experience with Learning Management Systems (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, etc.)
Special Working Conditions:
Depending on the needs of the department, may be required to teach:
- Evening and/or weekend classes
- 8- and/or 16-week classes
- Face-to-face, online, and/or hybrid format classes
- Learning communities
- May require work at multiple campuses.
- May require lifting to 25 pounds and pushing up to 75 pounds.
