The Department of History of Art and Archaeology is unique in its coverage of the arts, archaeology, architecture and material culture of Asia, Africa and the Middle East from ancient times to the present day. The Department is renowned as an alternative voice to Eurocentric art history, challenging the categories often taken for granted in the study of other cultures. About the Role:

The School of Arts seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Contemporary Art in the Department of the History of Art & Archaeology. You will provide expertise and carry out research in the field of contemporary art and art theory. You will specialise in one or more of the regions of the SOAS remit, complementing related existing specialisms in other areas of the Department and of the School of Arts, e.g., in film and screen studies and music. In teaching, the appointee will contribute primarily to our taught courses and supervision in contemporary art and in art theory and method on BA, MA, PGDip and MPhil/PhD programmes in History of Art, as well as related School of Arts programmes such as BA Creative Arts.

Requirements:

• PhD in a relevant field
• Evidence of a growing international professional network which would contribute to Knowledge Exchange, public (or non-academic) engagement, the development of strategic partnerships and student recruitment from the SOAS regions.
• A track record of participation in professional scholarly meetings and conferences, and advocacy, is essential
• A high degree of potential to shape and influence the field, to contribute to SOAS’s mission through research, impact and engagement and to enhance the reputation and standing of the Department of History of Art & Archaeology, the School of Arts and the university.
• Interpersonal and professional skills: The appointee will be highly motivated and provide evidence of excellent written and oral communications skills in teaching and in professional working relationships
• Excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritise against competing deadlines; and proven ability to work as part of a dynamic and high-functioning team.
• They will demonstrate a high potential to contribute to management of programmes, the curriculum and development of innovative pedagogies; as well as the ability to promote SOAS values, including equality, inclusion and diversity, and SOAS’s decolonising agenda.
• At least two high-quality research publications in any appropriate form (including but not limited to written work, digital outputs, exhibitions or films), which could be considered for evaluation in the national research assessment in the UK.
• Teaching experience, with evidence of high quality; teaching qualification, e.g., from the HEA/Advance HE.
• Art curating or equivalent cultural industries experience is highly desirable.
