Position summary:

ACIJ is seeking a full-time Lead Organizer based in the Birmingham area to grow our grassroots-led organizing strategy state-wide. The Lead Organizer will manage a team of organizers and community leaders state-wide to develop campaigns, build leadership and increase capacity among grassroots immigrant communities and allies. We seek candidates with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion and a proven ability to organize local communities.

The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of issues affecting immigrant communities and be able to work comfortably with allies in African American, LGBTQIA+, and interfaith communities on intersectional issues.

The Lead Organizer will build relationships and actively engage ally communities in campaigns and movement building efforts.

The Lead Organizer will work closely with board committees and report to the Executive Director.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Lead our organizing efforts, providing day-to-day management to regional ACIJ Organizers and working closely with Leadership Council, Executive Director and Board of Directors to develop the state-wide organizing strategy and work plan.
  • Oversee campaigns, education events, civic participation and leadership development activities.
  • Develop and strengthen the network of grassroots leaders and facilitate the building of lasting relationships between immigrant communities, allies and elected officials to engage in coalitions.
  • Create opportunities for grassroots membership to help define priorities and direction for carrying out ACIJ’s mission and vision.
  • Maintain frequent communication with the Executive Director to coordinate and inform of organizing work and progress.
  • Submit weekly reports to the Executive Director, along with a schedule of upcoming events.
  • Other responsibilities as determined by the Executive Director.
  • Written and verbal bilingual (English-Spanish) communication skills required.

  • Strong commitment to ACIJ’s goal of building a powerful justice movement for immigrants in Alabama.
  • Proven experience in organizing communities to produce action.
  • Understanding of the issues and policies that affect immigrants, especially in Alabama.
  • Ability to build consensus among diverse interests; strong interpersonal, communication, and team-building skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and hold organizers accountable to work plans with limited supervision.
  • Willingness to travel across the central region; full-time access to reliable transportation with a minimum of liability insurance coverage.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including frequent evenings and weekends.
