The Safari West Wildlife Foundation (SWWF) is a non-profit organization that operates alongside Safari West, a 400 acre preserve in Santa Rosa dedicated to conservation education and research of wildlife and African animals, some of whom are endangered.
The Foundation programs, in place for decades, exist to inspire youth from all walks of life to discover, engage with, and respect wildlife and their environment.
By emphasizing conservation, education, and research, the Foundation works to promote the well-being of animals and mankind through our universal connection to, dependence on, and care of the natural world.
The Foundation is expanding all the programs to serve more youth. To achieve optimal expansion, the Foundation seeks a Junior Keeper Instructor.

Education: Associate (Preferred)
Experience: Teaching or Equivalent: 1 year (Preferred)
Job Duties:
- This is a part-time position every Saturday and Sunday from 8:00am to 3:00pm. Additional hours may be required during the week, however there is flexibility. The program runs from February to November each year.
- Collaborate with animal staff, guides, conservation, and events staff in teens activities
- Creating a curriculum to implement into program that includes animal husbandry, research, and observation
- Educate teens in animal husbandry as well as conservation efforts
- Help teens develop skillset needed for future animal centred careers
- Mentor teen volunteers (including writing up letters of recommendation or doing volunteer evaluations)
- Maintains positive relationship with Safari West and communicates effectively regarding needed improvements.
- Maintain a safe, clean, sanitized environment for the Junior Keeper program and its participants. Ensure proper use and maintenance of provided equipment and property used in the programs.
- Acts as primary point of contact between parents and youth, parents, and Foundation. Include Foundation Staff in communications.
- Prepare teens for Junior Keeper internship which includes establishing core values such as working hard, reliability, teamwork, and communication.
Requirements:
- Person will be of flawless integrity and self-motivation.
- Two or four-year degree in related field (i.e., environmental science, zoology, biology, anthropology) from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrate extensive organizational skills in planning and producing programs and workload.
- Experience in a similar organization, where planning and teaching activities based on the developmental needs of young people are required.
- Experience working with youth and young adults.
- Pleasant and welcoming demeanor to youth, parents, and guests of the Safari West preserve.
- Strong communication skills both verbal and written.
- Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics.
- Knowledge with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Visio, Outlook), Google Suite. Experience with non-profit databases such as Commit Change, Raisers Edge, or Salesforce a plus.
- Demonstrated organizational, staff, and project management abilities.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds, hike extensively through terrain, drive Safari vehicle, train, and guide instructors in best safe practices at the Preserve.
