About:

American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking a Historian interested in dedicating 11 weeks in support of the National Park Service Intermountain Regional Office (Region 6, 7, 8) Heritage Partnerships Program.

This excellent opportunity is ideal for an enthusiastic young professional who is dedicated to better telling and preserving a more inclusive story about the American West that accurately reflects the diversity of our national story.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a professional development internship that introduces undergraduate and graduate students, from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the National Parks, to career opportunities within Cultural Resource Management in the NPS. Applicants must be 18-30 (up to 35 for Veterans) and either A) in pursuit of a higher education degree or B) still be within two years of graduation from a degree program

Location:

From the northern peaks of the Rocky Mountains all the way to the southern Chihuahuan Desert, the regional office serving the Department of Interior Regions 6, 7, and 8 includes 85 park units within eight states of the American West. With around 11.2 million acres of public land, the region hosts over 57 million visitors annually.

Living Allowance:

The ACE Member is expected to contribute 40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $455/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, paid bi-weekly.

Housing:

Housing is not provided by ACE or NPS. A reimbursement not to exceed $2,000/month will be provided to help offset the cost of housing.

AmeriCorps:

This position may be eligible for a 300-hour AmeriCorps Education Award ($1,311.11) upon successful completion of service hours. Additional enrolment and volunteer service is required.

Project Background and Goals:

The Heritage Partnerships Program’s historians are working on numerous initiatives to continue to improve representation and inclusiveness within this region’s National Historic Landmarks program portfolio of properties. In addition, this position will also support research and collaboration as the regional Heritage Partnerships Program expands its role and engagement with numerous National Park Service network programs including the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, National Reconstruction Era Network, and the African American Civil Rights Network.

Position Description:

The Historian candidate will conduct research and inventory work on African American history and associated historic resources in the West, focusing on the states of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma that make up the Intermountain region.

Duties:

  • Support the research, writing and review of various National Historic Landmark nominations in various stages of development
  • Participate in ongoing planning efforts to conduct a scholars’ roundtable focused on the Underground Railroad in Texas
  • Support research and survey work into Reconstruction Era resources within our region
  • Participate in planning and outreach related to promoting the African American Civil Rights Network within our region
  • Possible opportunities to participate in site visits to National Historic Landmark properties and high-potential properties

Requirements:

  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • This position is funded through the Public Land Corps Act which has specific program requirements
  • Must be 18-30 years of age to apply
