Vancouver International Film Festival is looking for a Film Curatorial Consultant, Black History Month

Location: Vancouver, Canada

Job Type: Part-time

Description:

VIFF’s Black History Month series was founded by Barbara Chirinos in 2012 and has since become a popular fixture in our calendar, offering Vancouver audiences a mixture of contemporary Black feature films, advocacy documentaries, radical, avant-garde, and experimental work, and landmark titles from a century of Black film. It draws on Pan-American, African, and international cinema and has touched on countless aspects of Black experience.

Our February 2021 edition will be the first accessible online via our VIFF Connect digital platform.

The Programming Consultant works closely with the programming team and participates in the selection of VIFF’s Black History Month Film Program. Culturally aware, the successful applicant will bring creative perspectives and ideas to help build out this year’s BHM series of between six to ten films with the greater goal of creating a fulsome and relevant program. In addition, you may be asked to record film introductions and filmmaker interviews.

As this role is intended as a mentorship opportunity, curatorial experience is an outcome, not a deciding qualification. The successful candidate will receive guidance and knowledge sharing from the programming team. Hours will be flexible, with regular check-ins with the Year-Round Programmer.

Qualifications:

  • General knowledge of international cinema
  • Passionate about celebrating Black film and filmmakers
  • Excited about film’s value as a social and educational tool
  • Highly organized and able to work within tight deadlines
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office, Zoom, and Slack
  • Access to reliable internet and computer with camera capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sourcing, reviewing, and recommending films for the 2021 VIFF Black History Month Program
  • Assisting in the creation of promotional notes for the selected films that will be used on VIFF’s website and in other marketing materials
  • Conducting pre-recorded introductions to films and interviews as needed.

Wrap Reporting:

  • Ensure any outstanding issues are resolved prior to contract completion.
  • Submit a final report to include statistics, revised job description (as needed), report on activities in the current year and make recommendations for future.

Interested candidates please apply.
