Job Summary:

The Equity and Engagement Specialist (20 hours per week) is responsible for providing African American and African diasporas youth and their families services at Juanita High School in the Lake Washington School District. This position serves as a liaison between students and Juanita High School faculty to help develop and sustain trusting and supportive relationships, increase student achievement and enhance their sense of belonging. Furthermore, this program provides comprehensive case management, life, and leadership skills, helps youth voice by connecting to and supporting their home culture, motivation to stay in school, and individual outreach counseling services to maximize their potential for personal and academic success.

This position is highly visible and always requires a professional demeanour and clear communication. This position’s nature is fast paced, requires the ability to collaborate with others, a high level of attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple projects, frequently changing priorities, short deadlines, and the use of numerous computer programs.

Primary Job Functions:

Provide individual outreach counseling services and comprehensive case management to African American and African diaspora students and their families, covering issues such as information and referral for needed community services and connecting families with appropriate community resources.

This program provides a weekly support group for African American and African diaspora students, using the evidence-based and/or best practice approach of culturally responsive, trauma-informed prevention services to increase a sense of belonging in the school community.

Support relationships between students/families and school truancy staff, advocating for and supporting African American and African diaspora students through the truancy system, to prevent students and families from going through the truancy court system by providing education about the system, information on how to navigate the school system, and connecting students and families to appropriate services.

  • Promote leadership skills, including youth-led community service projects and necessary cultural events. Students can become club officers (president, vice president, treasurer, secretary) and learn leadership skills.
  • Act as liaison with community resources.
  • Advocate for clients (school, etc.)
  • Participates in necessary school interdisciplinary guidance meetings.
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation.
  • Adhere to all Federal, State, and Local confidentiality requirements and guidelines.
  • Additional duties as assigned may include but are not limited to family support.
  • Meets regularly with supervisor for on-going program monitoring and case consultation.
  • Assure monthly reports, statistical information, client records, timesheet, contractual paperwork requirements are completed in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Cooperate as a team member with other YES services, attending meetings, initiating program development and evaluation at JHS.
  • Additional tasks may require.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioural Health/Social Work or
  • Chemical Dependency Professional or
  • Associates Degree in Behavioural Health plus two years of experience

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Understands the specific experiences of historically marginalized racial groups in the U.S., mainly African and Black diasporas, Indigenous, and Hispanic groups.

  • Demonstrates skill in an understanding of cultural differences.
  • An understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-cultural situations.
  • Have a solid ability to work with African American and African diaspora students and their families.
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • Aptitude to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize workload, complete assigned tasks, and maintain poise under pressure.
  • Dependable, receptive to change, willing to learn, cooperative approach to problem-solving, flexible team player.
  • Effectively work in both a team environment and independently with minimal oversight.
  • Computer literate and able to use Electronic Health Records and other software programs with basic training.
  • Physical / Working Requirements:

Position requires:

  • Able to travel from general office to school-based at JHS
  • Frequent sitting, standing, and walking
  • Ability to use hands and handle objects
  • Adequate vision and hearing is necessary for duties
  • Occasional pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds
  • Speaking/talking on the telephone and in-person
  • Ability to travel and work in multiple settings
  • Ability to work evening hours and adjust work schedule as necessary to meet business needs
