North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources is looking for an Environmental Services Assistant

Primary Purpose:
The Zoo’s Environmental Services Branch supports the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) and the NC Zoo by providing professional housekeeping services for the zoo’s buildings, exhibits, building grounds, plazas, trails, parking lots, and special events as well as managing the zoo’s recycling programs that contribute to a safe, sanitary, and “Green” zoo environment for visitors and staff. Staff in this branch are charged to provide housekeeping services, guest relations and service recovery to the zoo’s annual 800,000+ guests in a manner consistent with the environment of the zoo as a tourism destination and accredited institution. Branch operations are an integral part of the zoo’s strategic and operational planning. Public contact is highly visible and interactive, requiring a high level of customer relations and park information training. Positions work between 20 – 40 hours per week from March through October, including holidays and weekends. Weekday work hours are between the hours of 7:00 am – 4:00 pm and are based on the weather and guest attendance at the park. Weekend work hours are between the hours of 6:30 am 5:30 pm and are based on the weather and guest attendance at the park. Candidates provide an outstanding guest experience while ensuring a safe, sanitary, and “Green” environment for all guests and employees. Positions report directly to the Environmental Services Branch Manager and/or Team Leaders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Overall cleaning of the Parks 5 miles of walking trails including trash removal from pathways, natural areas, recycle bins and trash containers.
- Cleaning of office spaces and common areas.
- Cleaning of restrooms through the use of various cleaning supplies and chemicals.
- Restocking of Bathroom supplies such as toilet paper and paper towels, and feminine products.
- Sorting of recycling materials.
- Setting up for special events.
- Work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions.
- Interact and work in large crowds.
- Use two way radio communications.
- Walk and stand for the majority of the work shift
- Lift and drag at least 30 lbs. of weight
- Drive a variety of utility vehicles and trucks.
Job Requirements:
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must comply with NC Zoo Covid-19 Face Covering, Dress Code and Appearance Policies.
- Ability to work in extreme weather conditions typical to Central NC (i.e. heat, rain, or cold) and stand/walk for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to, outdoor allergens, dust, fumes, odour, loud noises, motion, and vibrations.
- Ability to use radio, telephone, and computer to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to safely operate rides, and handle tools and equipment.
- Possesses sufficient cognitive ability, auditory and visual acuity and communication skills to perform essential duties and follow general safety practices.
- Must be willing and able to work varied and long shifts including holidays, weekends and in support of events as needed.
- Must be able to work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, bending, reaching, and standing, walking, and lifting and carrying 30 lbs.
- Excellent visual acuity and hearing required.
- Must have ability to navigate paved as well as rough or uneven pathways.
- Possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human blood borne pathogens. Possible exposure to dangerous chemicals (e.g. chlorine bleach, cleaning agents, etc.). Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
