Schedule:

  • Typically, 40 hours a week and generally Monday – Friday, in a museum classroom and museum gallery setting.
  • Regular core hours are 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Friday.
  • Summer hours may occasionally be shifted to accommodate aftercare program.
  • Some weekends required.
  • Overtime and/or flex time is provided.

Purpose:

The Education and Engagement Specialist supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of museum programs for students, youth, families, and the public. These programs include but are not limited to: Seasonal and pop-up camps both in person and online; Virtual Magazine content, SECOND SATURDAYS Family Days, scout programming, field trip programming, and education marketing and administration. The Education and Engagement Specialist also helps deliver school and teacher content through field trip teaching both in person and online, assisting with Family History Nights and other initiatives as well as special projects for the Education Department. This position is required to learn all Frazier Museum curricula, assist in the development of new ones, acquire a strong working knowledge of museum exhibits and subject matter, help with bookings, registration, and administrative duties for the department, and demonstrate a strong working knowledge of appropriate teaching methods in a museum setting.

Job Functions:

  • Supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of programming for youth & family audiences throughout the school year.
  • Serves as a lead teacher for camp programming and is responsible for one class for all camp sessions that consist of multiple classes, and as primary support for camp sessions that are only one class.
  • Creates 3-5 unique camp lessons per week for weeklong camp sessions, and one class session per day for day camps.
  • Serves as primary teacher during aftercare sessions during camps with an aftercare program.
  • Assists and serves as backup for Second Saturday and Scout programs.
  • Supports and assists in supervision of the Museum’s internship program and the teen volunteer force used in youth & family -related programming.
  • Assists the Educational Programming Team with development and implementation of educational programs and initiatives, including teaching and giving tours.
  • Assists the Educational Programming Team with administrative duties and preparation/set-up as needed for programs including, but not limited to camps, field trips, family history nights, program hosting, family days, etc.
  • Collaborates with other departments, such as Marketing, to create, advertise, and implement Educational programming.
  • Demonstrate the museum’s business values of excellence, creativity, leadership, fiscal responsibility, and stewardship.

  • Assumes other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in Museum Education, Education, Public History, History, or subject related to the museum’s scope and purpose and/or job responsibilities. These subjects include but are not limited to Early Childhood Education, Theatre Arts, Communications, Anthropology, Art, Pan-African Studies, English, Humanities, LGBTQ Studies, and Gender Studies.
  • Minimum one year of experience (or equivalent) in working with youth and family, afterschool, or informal education programming (or a combination of experience and academic background).
  • Demonstrated passion and/or enthusiasm for history (or other subject matter related to the Frazier Museum) as well as demonstrated enthusiasm for museum education and/or informal education.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to make learning a fun and engaging experience.
  • Ability and enjoyment in working with diverse audiences and children of all ages.
  • Energetic, enthusiastic, and friendly.
  • Ability, willingness and enthusiasm for learning new subject matter.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, time-management, and project management abilities.
  • Experience of or knowledge in writing lesson plans.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, and virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom and Google Meet.
  • Experience with Adobe Suite or Canva Pro and with video editing is a plus.
  • Academic research experience strongly preferred.
