Description:
The successful candidate will lead a department of 33 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 44 non-tenure-track faculty with commitments to research and teaching not only within the department but across the College and the University.
The English Department offers a BA in English and two master’s degrees, in English and in Writing, Rhetoric, and Media, as well as contributing substantially to a Ph.D. program in Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design and to undergraduate interdisciplinary programs in World Cinema, Women’s Leadership, and Pan-African Studies.
Candidates should be Professors or advanced Associate Professors in the Department of English with a strong record of research and publication, a commitment to teaching excellence, and demonstrated administrative experience.
The successful candidate for Department Chair will manage course scheduling, budgeting, hiring and evaluation of faculty, and assessment of programs, in addition to maintaining an active program of scholarship and service and teaching one (1) course each semester.
The Chair will be expected to build consensus, practice shared governance, and demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
The Department is particularly interested in leadership that works to build more equitable working conditions for non-tenure track faculty.
Chair appointments are usually for an initial term of three years and are renewable for a second term.
Department Chairs report to and serve at the pleasure of the Dean of the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities.
