Job Description:

  • As a Juvenile Correctional Officer, you will supervise the activities of at-risk youth in a residential facility, for juveniles pending disposition of their court cases at the Juvenile Detention Center (JDC).
  • The Juvenile Detention Center is a state-licensed facility for juveniles ages 10 to 18+, who are pending juvenile court process.
  • Candidates must be available to work various shifts, which include day, evening, overnight, holiday, and weekend hours.
  • The schedule requires various 12 and 10 hour shifts to provide 24-hour coverage.
  • Shift schedules are subject to change due to division programming changes.
  • A shift differential of $1.00 per hour will be paid for nights and weekends. Meals are provided and a uniform allowance is given for qualifying positions.
  • Ensure the safety of staff and residents by building relationships, employing de-escalation techniques, and using verbal commands and force when necessary.
  • Act as a role model and a residential counsellor for juvenile residents in the facility by establishing healthy relationships with them and acknowledging and responding appropriately to resident behavior.
  • Partner with co-workers to plan, organize, administer, and supervise resident daily activities, such as recreation, school and volunteer programs, and leisure activities. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of professionals which may include supervisors, managers, other juvenile correctional officers, social workers, and probation officers. Enforce resident rules, document resident behaviours and activities in appropriate logs and reports. Receive and/or release juveniles from facility; transport residents to placement with county vehicle.
  • Need to have: One of the following: Two years or more (90 quarter/60 semester credits) of college or vocational/technical coursework in corrections, law enforcement, or a related criminal justice or behavioural/social science field.
  • Two years of full-time equivalent work experience in corrections, law enforcement, or criminal justice. Active military duty with an honourable discharge.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver’s permit.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Ability to stand, stoop, bend, reach, run, and walk both inside and outside.
  • Nice to have: Experience: Serving the needs of at-risk youth in a residential setting (such as group counselors, outreach workers etc.).
  • Working in a correctional, residential treatment, and/or other comparable setting which involved the supervision and/or control of clients. Communicating effectively and professionally both verbally and in writing.
  • Commitment and dedication to the needs of adolescent offenders and their families. Bilingual abilities.
  • Completion of an internship and/or have paid work experience for Hennepin County’s DOCCR or similar jurisdiction.
  • Ability to work effectively with an increasingly diverse client population. Knowledge of: Individual and interpersonal behavior within a social system.
  • The criminal justice system and its stakeholders.
  • Candidates with bilingual skills in Spanish, Somali, and/or Hmong are encouraged to apply.
