GVM is a non-profit long term care home with 5 nursing home units, 142 residents, and over 200 staff. One of the units is a secure unit for people with dementia and wandering behavior. We also have an attached assisted living complex (30 units), and an enriched housing complex (40 units). GVM staffing includes Nursing (Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Continuing Care Assistants), Dietary / Food Services, Environmental Services (Laundry, Housekeeping, Maintenance), Chaplaincy, Recreation, OT/PT/PTA and Administrative Support.

Position Summary:
An Assistant Director of Care (ADOC) is responsible for the nursing team and quality of resident care in the absence of the Director of Care. The ADOC is responsible for the monitoring of nursing staff, nursing activities, and resident care, as well as ensuring Grand View Manor (GVM) is in compliance with the federal, provincial, and local standards including the DHW provided nursing budget. The ADOC is responsible, attentive, knowledgeable, and provides high quality care to residents. The ADOC provides support to the nursing team and the Director of Care, and thoughtful care to residents and tenants. GVM’s ideal candidate will provide resident-centered leadership that promotes the values of the organization.
Responsibilities:
Admissions & Assessments-
- Facilitates admission and in-house transfers for residents and tenants (Orchard View and Fundy Villa) in close collaboration with nursing staff and other departments.
- Conducts pre-admission and on-going assessments of tenants (Orchard View and Fundy Villa) bio-psycho-socio-cultural needs and continuous monitoring to ensure that each resident’s stay at GVM is optimized
- Conducts pre-admission and assessments for residents while monitoring on-going assessments conducted by Nurse Managers
- Direct contact for Orchard View and Fundy Villa tenants and conducts quarterly meetings
- Addresses issues and challenges presented by and/or regarding residents and family members through individual support/counseling, group work, and/or through community
- Liaison with (but not limited to) Department of Health, hospital discharge planners, placement officers, and legal department for resident-related information and needs
- Plans and implements interventions for challenging behaviors in collaboration with internal and external resources
- Facilitates special needs requests for residents
- Familiar with advance directives, power of attorney, and other pertinent legislation that may impact residents in long term care
Infection Prevention & Control-
- Maintains accurate statistical record as assigned
- Prepares the quarterly reports for Quality Risk Management Committee with collaboration of the Nurse Manager team
- Responsible for PPE inventory with collaboration of ordering manager
- Leads the Infection Prevention & Control committee
Health & Safety-
- Investigates complaints related to resident abuse and reports to Adult Protection with collaboration of Director of Care
- Keeps accurate and timely documentation on residents’ charts and other tools that are being utilized in-house
- Monitors safety leadership and education for both for JOHSC members, GVM employees, and residents with collaboration of the GVM Safety Officer.
- Responsible for the ongoing updating of the Business Continuity Plan and direct liaison with AwareNS.
- Planning and implementing Emergency Management as the Emergency Management Coordinator.
- Monitors nursing inventory with collaboration of ordering manager and access to Sage Inventory Module.
- Liaison with pharmacy and unit coordinators and responsible for request coverage of exceptional status drugs
Education & In-Services-
- Provides staff support and education as needed specifically in areas dealing with grief and loss, resident-centered communication, empathy, and conflict resolution.
- Planning and facilitating education for the nursing department both in-house and offsite with focus on promoting best practices and risk management in Long Term Care.
- Use of the LEADs model of compassionate care and how this is implemented at Grand View Manor.
- Acts as Surge Coordinator and monitors GVM employees participation in both in-service and offsite sessions (excluding Department specific education)
- Develops tools / kits / pamphlets, and other informational materials that will benefit residents / tenants / family members
- Provides facility tours as requested
- Assists in preparation and presentation of performance appraisals for unit coordinators
- Assists with interviews of new staff in replacement of DOC when not available
Qualifications:
- Current registration in College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia
- Minimum 5 years supervisory experience in geriatrics
- Additional courses/experience in management and/or supervisory skills
