The Council for Advancement of African Canadians in Alberta (CAAC), operating as the Africa Centre is a not for profit organization that serves as a community hub, providing programs and services from a place of cultural awareness and competency to the families in our diverse community. The Africa Centre’s mission is to create opportunities for access and full participation for African Canadians in Alberta.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop strong relationships with participants and their support network
  • Assess and address the immediate needs of participant youth, especially those who are seeking support when other service providers are closed
  • Assist clients with resume/cover letter writing and development; assist with completion of employment applications; computer consultations (related to job search)
  • Work closely with fellow program staff/team members
  • Assist clients in exiting street life, maintaining independence in the community, and/or accessing supported living
  • Accompaniment to appointments, visitation in hospital or independent living situation, 1 to 1 support, risk assessments, supportive counselling
  • Escorts to community resources when requested
  • Assess the needs of and establish ‘plans of care’ for clients
  • One-on-one or group interaction (brainstorming, relief facilitation, counselling); interview coaching/preparation
  • Prepare progress notes, program evaluations on an on-going basis.
  • Liaising and working with parents, schools, the police, and other community groups/organizations
  • Network/outreach and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with professionals, adults, and other community resources

  • Cultural proficiency that is applicable to the various source countries of vulnerable populations
  • Strong understanding of and ability to support young adults.
  • Ability to work within a trauma informed lens
  • Ability to work late hours and/or weekends

Skills:

  • Process observation and analysis of group dynamics
  • Written and oral communication skills
  • Facility with the computer, knowledge of Word and Excel
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Working knowledge of:
  • Issues facing young adults in marginalized communities
  • Local and surrounding labour markets and academic institutions
  • Concepts related to career development (i.e. resume/cover letter development, interview Techniques, career planning, job maintenance, and networking)
  • Community resources

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Social Work required
  • Experience working with youth who face multiple barriers
  • Knowledge of community resources required
  • Experience working with youth facing multiple barriers to employment
  • Occasional evening work or weekends will be required
  • Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle
  • Fluency in French language will be an asset

Requirements:

  • 40 hours/week
  • Valid driver’s license, personal vehicle, and evidence of up-to-date car insurance
