Program Description:

Sustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) is a project of the Public Health Institute (PHI) in partnership with Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). STAR is a Global Health talent hub. Background:

USAID provides global technical leadership on HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment and monitors the impact of the Agency’s HIV/AIDS programs. USAID is a key partner in the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and works closely with other USG agencies on this initiative. This position sits within the USAID Office of HIV/AIDS, in the Prevention, Care and Treatment Division, Pediatric Maternal and Adult Clinical Branches. Introduction:

The Intern (Intern) will be assigned to the Prevention, Care and Treatment Division of the Office of HIV/AIDS (OHA) within the Bureau for Global Health. OHA is primarily responsible for leading the Agency’s efforts within the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a multibillion, multifaceted approach to combating the disease around the world.

Reporting structure:

The Intern will work closely with the Prevention, Care and Treatment (PCT) Division and the Pediatric Maternal Clinical Branch (PMB) and Adult Clinical Branch (ACB) and receive technical guidance from the Leads of the Adolescent and Young Adult Technical Units within the Division of Prevention Care and Treatment, who will serve as their onsite managers.

  • Familiarity with USAID and PEPFAR programming.

Essential Duties:

  • Support the OHA Adolescent and Young Adult Technical Units to develop strategies to identify, enroll, and retain individuals on HIV treatment, with a focus on adolescents and young adults, in order to successfully achieve viral load suppression.
  • Contribute to the coordination of HQ-based Technical Unit activities, including quarterly reviews and technical inputs into program operational guidance and partner work plans.
  • Assist with implementation of USAID’s HIV programs through the review of quarterly data.
  • Tracking needed corrective actions across country programs related to adolescents and young adults.
  • Support country-specific quarterly PEPFAR data review for the Adolescent and Young Adult Technical
  • Anticipated learning outcomes:
  • All STAR Interns will participate in learning activities (*approximately 10% time) during their internship. By the end of the internship, the Intern will be able to:
  • Gain exposure to USAID and PEPFAR programming and Adolescent and Young Adult HIV Treatment through global health programming.
  • Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.
  • Develop a global health-focused career plan with a mentor.

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled masters or other post-bachelor’s degree candidates or completion of such within the past 12 months.
  • Demonstrated experience in research and analysis, with strong writing skills.
  • Ability to manipulate data and data imagery charts using Excel and web-based applications.
  • This position may require travel. Ability to participate in a field experience, which may involve domestic and/or international travel and overnight stays for up to 2 weeks pending the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.
  • US citizenship or US permanent residency required.
  • Fluency in French, Portuguese, or an African language preferred.
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS preferred.
