Location: Toronto, Canada

Job Type: Full-time

Contract length: 12 months

Schedule:

  • 8-hour shift
  • Monday to Friday

Skills and Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in social science, education and a relevant field or equivalent combination of training and experience in program coordination and ACB community and peer engagement
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years’ experience in community engagement, newcomer volunteer/peer engagement, Public Health or a Social Science field
  • Recent experience in recruiting, training, assigning and recognizing ACB community members in a culturally suitable way.
  • Strong Knowledge and lived experience of issues affecting ACB communities in Ontario to create healthier and vibrant ACB communities in the province.
  • Proven experience in assisting ACB newcomer communities in job search and other settlement issues through engaging them at APAA.
  • Documented experience in mobilizing ACB community members such as volunteers peer educators and newcomers
  • Working experience in an environment of mobilizing more than 300 volunteers
  • Experience in handling day to day requests from ACB community members and partners
  • Hands on experience in mobilizing ACB communities for major community events (gay pride, Afrofest, Caribbana, Jambana, Afrivillage, Afrizouk, Toronto unity mosque for LGBTQ, Salaam prayer events for EIDs etc. Proven experience working with ACB, newcomers, Immigrants and youth having trouble with the law, to engage them
  • Must possess Strong facilitation and training skill and proven experience in providing culturally appropriate training in HIV 101, HIV 102, ARAO, Volunteer Codes of conduct and APAA’s & ACCHO’s strategies.
  • Substantial knowledge of HIV/AIDS in ACB communities as it relates to community mobilization
  • Excellent communication skills in oral and written and use of social media to mobilize community members
  • Demonstrated and proven Cultural competency
  • Ability to work independently and has a proven track record of working with a team environment.
  • Proven experience working with ACB and mainstream agencies such as OAN, ACCHO, OHTN, Black Cap, PWA, ACT, Newcomer shelters, ACB community agencies to promote Community participation
  • Strong organizational skills combined with leadership, team building and interpersonal skills
  • Must speak at least one or more African languages from the ACB communities for a better engagement.
