Founded in 1996, The African American Policy Forum (AAPF) is an innovative think tank that connects academics, activists, and policymakers to promote efforts to dismantle structural inequality. We utilize new ideas and innovative perspectives to transform public discourse and policy. We promote frameworks and strategies that address a vision of racial justice that embraces the intersections of race, gender, class, and the array of barriers that disempower those who are marginalized in society. Experience:
- Program management: 5 years (Preferred)
- Policy: 3 years (Preferred)
Duties:
- Manage the daily operation and expansion of AAPF campaigns and initiatives
- Monitor and advance effective AAPF policy and advocacy programs
- Create functional strategies and objectives for AAPF campaigns and initiative
- Develop and monitor the budgets/policies and procedures to support the programmatic infrastructure
- Identify priorities, gaps, and trends in program resourcing areas and make recommendations accordingly
- Provide leadership and innovative ideas to the programmatic efforts of AAPF, including campaign support, policy advocacy, capacity building, grant making, and movement building
- Assist in monitoring state and local education policy activity, including legislation, ballot initiatives, and referenda relative to campaigns
- Foster relationships with key executive and legislative staff at the federal, state, local, and tribal levels to build support for AAPF policy goals
- Develop a national program that supports grassroots organizations across several jurisdictions to launch new or advance existing racial justice campaigns
- Help with media activities and events that raise awareness of our campaigns through mainstream and social justice press
- Represent AAPF at meetings, conferences and public hearings to gain and share information relevant to the program’s operation
- Ensure accurate and timely internal/external reporting and statistical information for policy and advocacy programs
- Support grant writing campaigns to funding organizations, as agreed upon by AAPF
- Be accessible on evenings and weekends as needed
- Perform other related duties as needed
Requirements:
- Familiarity with the AAPF’s campaigns and initiatives
- Intermediate comprehension of Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality
- A minimum of 5 years of program management experience
- A minimum of 3 years of policy experience
- Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills
- A deep knowledge of program management principles, strategic thinking and strong leadership qualities
- A strong organizing, advocacy or social justice background
- The ability to write in descriptive, analytical, and persuasive registers
- An eagerness to participate in generative brainstorming sessions
- A consistent, critical engagement with the broader media landscape
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a dynamic environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite
