Job Function:

The Family Therapist is responsible for providing mental health assessments, crisis intervention, treatment, and case management to adolescents (who are the at highest risk for perpetrating and/or being at risk for gun violence) and their parents/families involved in ABLE’s youth violence prevention program: HERE FOR LIFE/FREE FOR LIFE. Our mission is to increase the lifespan and quality of life for youth by reducing the risk of violence-related behaviour using a relational, family systems, comprehensive, trauma-informed approach.

Duties:

  • Conduct intake appointments, client orientation, and mental health assessments for the initiation of services of new clients.
  • Develop, implement, coordinate, and evaluate client treatment plans.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide outpatient individual and group psychotherapy to adolescents and families.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed.
  • Facilitate linkages/referrals with various aspects of the client’s ecosystem (family, school, work, etc.).
  • Maintain an active caseload as determined by client census.
  • Actively participate in weekly meetings.
  • Provide advocacy for clients and maintain communication with all service providers.
  • Prepare clinical documentation and paperwork, such as a client genogram, timeline, mental health assessment, assessment/evaluation tools, daily progress notes, treatment plans, transfer and closing summaries, weekly caseload lists, etc.
  • Perform data entry into appropriate data tracking systems.
  • Provide supervision, mentorship, and seminar/CEU teaching for interns and community professional development events.
  • Engage in continuous learning, especially in the areas of trauma-informed practices and approaches that strengthens own capacity to support the complex, intense needs of adolescents and their families.
  • Provide monthly reports to the supervisor/CRED Clinical Director.
  • Assist in program development as required.
  • Participate in agency and community meetings, such as all staff meetings, monthly TR4IM general and committee meetings, required funder meetings, and other meetings as assigned by supervisor or Clinical Director.
  • Become cross-trained in various agency wide programs and functions to meet ABLE’s needs and interests. Assignments can be intermittent or continuous.
  • Maintain ongoing communication regarding the treatment process with supervisor or Clinical Director.
  • Maintain CEU requirements.
  • Learn varied curriculums that allow ABLE to provide strategic training in various community, school, and justice system settings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Program Manager, Clinical Director/CEO.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of two years’ experience in providing family, children, and/or adolescent therapy.
  • Experience with children and adolescents diagnosed with PTSD or other trauma-related diagnoses, Anxiety, ADHD, and Learning Disabilities is preferred.
  • Experience providing family and individual therapy is necessary; couples and group therapy is preferred.
  • Experience providing trauma-focused interventions are essential.
  • Knowledge, experience, passion and commitment to serving African-American adolescents at significant risk for involvement in street violence required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Data Entry software required.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills required.
  • Self-motivated: strives to identify and implement ways to accomplish tasks and goals, takes the initiative.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, local, and private social services regulations and compliance required.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours with a flexible schedule.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to complete tasks in a timely manner are
  • required to perform the job.
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the State of Illinois or Licensed Clinical Professional Counsellor (LCPC) in the State of Illinois. Additional CADC or MISA licensure preferred.
