mothers2mothers (m2m) is an Africa-based NGO that unlocks the potential of women to eliminate paediatric AIDS and create healthy families across ten sub-Saharan African countries. m2m trains, employs, and helps empower women living with HIV to work as community healthcare workers in understaffed health centres and underserved communities. Through a peer-to-peer approach, these ‘Mentor Mothers’ deliver a range of health services, advice, and support to women and their families. Started in Cape Town, South Africa in 2001 with an initial focus on preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV, m2m has innovated and built on its strengths and now provides family-centred support for a range of related health and social issues spanning pregnancy, birth, childhood, and adolescence. It also partners with governments and other NGOs on the adoption of its programme to spread the Mentor Mother Model and its benefits. m2m has a track record of scaling its services and proven impact. To date, m2m has reached over 11M women and children under two and created more than 11,000 jobs for African women living with HIV.

Job Description: Development Manager, North America

We are looking for a dynamic and results-driven Development Manager with an excellent understanding of philanthropy, events, fundraising tools, and processes, to join a high performing fundraising team. This position is responsible for supporting fundraising and communication efforts for m2m North America.

Working closely with the North America Director and the Development Director, this role will provide fundraising and operational support to m2m’s North America resource mobilization (RM) strategy. You will provide support to special events, campaigns and volunteer committees that will deliver a significant increase in revenue.

This role will require extensive collaboration with colleagues in the US, Europe, South Africa, and m2m-African country offices, and contribute to the advancement of a global RM strategy.

Responsibilities:

  • Fundraising & Donor-Focused Management-
  • Support the North America Director, Development Director, and entity efforts to achieve revenue target and grow unrestricted revenue through streamlined fundraising activities, processes, and communications.
  • Manage portfolio of individual donors to help achieve philanthropy revenue target through donor identification, stewardship, and cultivation.
  • Support fundraising efforts and engagement from m2m North America board, events committees, and advisory councils.
  • Assist with successful achievement of Global Giving Circle, Major Giving, and Individual/Regular Giving efforts.
  • Engage senior staff as appropriate in advancing prospect relationships, including planning, and coordinating their cultivation, proposal, and solicitation efforts.
  • Ensure exceptional stewardship to major donors, partners, and philanthropic prospects.
  • Coordinate and prepare materials, data, and financial reviews for donor meetings and pitches.
  • Conduct prospect research to identify individuals and companies with mission alignment and philanthropic interests.
  • Prepare and draft compelling, concise, persuasive communications to internal and external audiences.
  • Coordinate across departments to develop marketing and audience engagement plans for key programs and donor engagement.
  • Events & Community Fundraising-
  • Assist with donor engagement, communications, coordination, and execution for fundraising and cultivation events (in person and virtual).
  • Help create and develop the m2m North America event fundraising strategy to deliver event income, including planning, organizing, and implementing prospecting and stewardship events.
  • Coordinate and help oversee successful achievement of community fundraising efforts.
  • Support other periodic fundraising, outreach, and volunteer events as needed.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 5+ years relevant work experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven experience cultivating and stewarding donor and stakeholder relationships.
  • Adept at developing consistent messaging and understanding the connection between marketing, communications, and development.
  • Experience in complex international or global working environments.
  • Experience in the donor journey and applying process and strategy to diverse fundraising activities.
  • Management experience, including creating a high-performance environment through role modelling and using KPIs to measure performance.
  • Basic understanding of financial management including budgeting and forecasting.
  • IT literate including the use of Microsoft Office, Outlook, Skype, SharePoint, and donor databases (knowledge of Salesforce a plus).
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
