Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is offering an exciting opportunity for an exceptional clinician-scientist to lead its newly established clinical trials unit.
AHRI is a 540-member independent academic institute with an annual budget of ~R350 million. AHRI conducts world-class research in HIV, TB, and non-communicable disease, spanning basic, clinical, social and population sciences. AHRI has recently established a clinical trials unit in an effort toward greater intervention in the communities the Institute partners with. The clinical trials unit’s focus will be driven by AHRI’s strategy, with a phase I/II experimental TB drug trial and a phase IIb/III experimental vaccine trial (TB, HIV or Covid-19) initially envisaged. All activities would be in collaboration with local and international stakeholders.
The clinical trials unit lead would be an experienced principal investigator of experimental product clinical trials. They would be appointed as a faculty member at AHRI, responsible for consolidating the new unit. They would ultimately recruit for clinical trials, and be responsible for funding, planning, execution, and reporting. Additionally, they would provide leadership of all components of the unit. The clinical trials unit lead would be expected to develop an independent research programme within AHRI, delivering classical academic outputs such as publications and conference presentations, engagement with policy makers and the public, successful competition for research funding, training of students, postdocs and fellows, and establishing an appropriate external network for the focus areas.
Requirements:
The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years’ experience in conducting clinical trials of experimental products; publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals; success in obtaining independent research funding; student, postdoc or fellow training experience; and excellent understanding and working knowledge of all aspects of experimental product clinical trials, including managing a clinical trials unit and implementing Good Clinical Practice (GCP). The incumbent should have leadership and management experience. The clinical trials unit lead will hold a MBChB (or equivalent MD qualification). They would need to be registered with the HPCSA as a medical practitioner and have a valid driver’s licence.
