Summary:
The Studio Museum in Harlem is the nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally, and internationally and for work that has been inspired and influenced by black culture. It is a site for the dynamic exchange of ideas about art and society. Currently, the Museum seeks a Junior Staff Accountant with strong analytical skills and knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. This position will support the Finance Department in ensuring compliance and enforcement of financial policies and assisting with the digitization of the finance files and the department’s transition to a paperless environment.
The Junior Staff Accountant will perform the day-to-day accounting work for the Museum, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash receipts entries.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Process accounts payable, cash receipts, accounts receivable entries with exceptional accuracy
- Review invoices for correct payment amount, proper general ledger account assignment and appropriate authorizations. Communicate with staff to make necessary adjustments.
- Communicate with vendors regarding outstanding payables
- Maintain accounts payable files, including invoices and check copies. Establish and maintain paperless filing system for same.
- Establish and maintain paperless filing system for contracts and grants. Maintain electronic payroll, HR files
- Obtain appropriate documentation including form W-9 and independent contractor forms, as required per IRS regulations, for consultant and vendor payments
- Deposit checks and cash receipts timely and accurately
- Enter or Import AP transactions using Concur.
- Assist in the preparation of internal financial reports
- Assist with the interim and year-end audit, including preparation of schedules as needed
- Assist with the paperless project to include digitization of the Finance department files
- Maintain Professional certification in Financial Edge NXT
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Associates Degree in Accounting or a related field required
- 1-2 years of professional experience in Accounting and Finance, ideally in museums or other cultural organizations required
- Experience with Financial Edge NXT, FundEZ, or other Fund Accounting software, Concur, Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, SharePoint, and PowerPoint desired
